Sensors unpairing during use on Chromebook & iphone

We have acquired 5 pocketlab sensors for our physics class. Unfortunately they are very reluctant to pair with phones (iPhones, mostly) and Chromebooks.  And when they are paired, they frequently become unpaired during the test run or when the user presses the "stop" on the app.  How can we keep them connected reliably?  This is very frustrating for our students.

Hi Mr. Chan, 

We are very sorry you are experiencing these pairing issues. I know that must be frustrating, so we apologize. 

Just so I can get a better idea of the issue to help you troubleshoot, I want to ask a few questions. 


1. What model iPhones are you experiencing the issues with and what iOS version are they running? 

2. What model Chromebooks are you using? 

3. Are all versions of the PocketLab app up to date? (Most likely they up to date if you've downloaded them in the last couple weeks, but just wanted to check). 

4. Are you experiencing the same issues with all five PocketLabs or is it specific to just one? 

5. When the user hits the "stop" button and it becomes unpaired, is the app itself crashing and shutting off or does the PocketLab just disconnect? Is that happening on both iPhones and Chromebooks or just one? 

I haven't seen a disconnect issue when the stop button is hit before so I will do some testing both with an iPhone and with a Chromebook today to see if I can replicate the issue.

Hi Mr. Chan, 

One more quick question. I'm doing some testing with some of our Chromebooks at the office. Do you know what version of Chrome your Chromebooks are running? 

If you click on the Google profile icon in the lower right corner of the screen, the click settings (which could just be the gear icon or it could say "settings"), then click "About Chrome OS", then it should tell you a version number.

We are on ChromeOS 55.0.2883.105. It tells me that this version is up to
date. The Pocketlab app was downloaded today. I was connected to a sensor
on this OS and it disconnected when I tried to change the sampling rate on
the Pocketlab app.

Sometimes the settings icons do not appear (like the sampling rate or mode).

All of this inconsistent behavior is really frustrating for the students.

Students are also trying their own phones. Like IOS 10.2 These seem to
disconnect too, and I have not seen the settings icon to change sampling
rate.

The devices were purchased in the last month through Terri Hannigan,
Cupertino High School/Fremont Union High School District.


We are doing the crash cushion activity. Ramming directly into a solid
wall produces highly variable results. Probably due to the low sampling
rate (20 Hz) missing the impact peak. So even when we get data, it is not
accurate.

Thanks for checking on the OS version. We are really sorry for the frustration. Our goal is to make using PocketLab as easy and as intuitive as possible, so we apologize that you haven't had a great experience so far. 

We are actually located in West San Jose, so we would be more than happy to come by after school or on your prep period to troubleshoot these issues.

I'm testing out a few different Chromebooks to try and replicate the disconnection issues you experienced. For the issue you are seeing with the icons, they do change depending on whether you are streaming data, recording data, or reviewing data. For example, when you first connect, data immediately streams to the app. You can change to different sensors, change the data rates, the units, etc. using the icons at the top. Once you start a recording, however, some of those icons disappear because you can no longer change those settings. I took a quick video to show what I'm referring to. 

For the issue you are seeing with the icons, they do change depending on whether you are streaming data, recording data, or reviewing data. For the crash cushion activity we've seen best results when we have a low incline on the ramp and then place the cushion/wall not directly at the bottom of the ramp but a half a meter or so away from the bottom. This is generally better for making sure the data captures the impact.

I would like to know how and if this was resolved.  I am having the same problem with my brand new Pocketlabs disconnecting from our Chromebooks and also pairing to a Chromebook that is farther away than the one the students are trying to pair to.  Our Chromebooks are running version 56.0.2924.110
